About the Race

The SEEKARHAUS AND KRINGSALM Family Trail, with its 1st destination Kringsalm (3K) and 2nd destination Hochalm (5K), leads you and your loved ones from the starting area at the pass summit (Radstädter Tauernpass) in Obertauern, first across the B99 federal highway (crossing secured with marshals!) and then on the left side of the Seekarstraße to the sports center in Obertauern, where the first 20 meters of elevation gain must be overcome immediately after crossing the federal highway. At the sports center, turn left onto Ringstraße and after about 100 meters you'll reach the junction on your right, marking the start of the hiking trail towards Berghotel Sonnhof, the Seekarhaus, and the Krings and Dikt'n Alm. After a short downhill section on the gravel road to the Zentralbahn valley station, you'll cross a wide wooden bridge over the rushing Hundsfeld-Taurachbach stream and then pass through the gate in the pasture fence into the unique Obertauern-Hundsfeldmoor nature reserve and European protected area. If you have a buggy or stroller for your child(ren), you'll need to lift it over the fence at this point. From there, follow a moderately ascending nature trail that takes you in a sharp left turn under the Zentralbahn chairlift and over a rise to the Sonnhofweg trail. There, turn right onto the Sonnhof asphalt road, then after just 100 meters, at the next left-hand bend opposite the Sonnlift lift station, continue straight ahead towards the already clearly visible radio tower. Follow the moderately ascending gravel path along the edge of the nature reserve until you reach the beautiful Hundsfeldsee lake and rejoin Seekarstraße. Continue along Seekarstraße until you reach the 5-star Hotel Das Seekarhaus, visible from afar, which you pass on your left, continuing along Seekarstraße. Once you've conquered the steep ramp of Seekarstraße between Seekarhaus and Kringsalm, turn directly left towards the Kringsalm terrace, where the refreshment station is located. Here, you and your child(ren) will have already completed the first 95 meters of elevation gain. Here at the first checkpoint, you and your family could already collect your finisher medals if you decide to stop with your loved ones. Otherwise, there are still another 2.4 km and 198 meters of elevation gain to tackle to Krummschnabelsee and Grünwaldsee, and finally to the finish line on the terrace of the Hochalm – famous for its skiing in winter. A refreshment stop at the Kringsalm's terrace, perhaps followed by a short break, will do you and your family good, as a significant climb awaits you immediately afterward. First, follow the somewhat steeper meadow of ski run 21a up to the Dikt'n Alm. Once there, open the gate in the wooden fence and walk through the Dikt'n Alm area until you reach the barrier on the Seekarstraße road. Go around the barrier on the right and follow the Seekarstraße (asphalt) uphill – initially moderately steep, then becoming somewhat steeper in three switchbacks – until you reach the Krummschnabelsee, a natural paradise and moorland lake where you can swim and borrow a SUP (stand-up paddleboard) free of charge. For the detour to Krummschnabelsee, you and your family will briefly leave the Seekarstraße road, reaching the highest point of the Family Trail at exactly 1,999 meters and completing all 293 meters of ascent. Now comes the downhill run to Grünwaldsee and the Hochalm. First, follow the path along Krummschnabelsee until you rejoin the Seekarstraße road. Here you can already see Grünwaldsee and the Hochalm. Follow the Seekarstraße downhill to Grünwaldsee and run below the Hochalm, arriving directly after the children's playground with its climbing frames, at the finish line on the Hochalm terrace! Here you and your child(ren) will receive your finisher medals and can celebrate your achievement together at the Hochalm! Whether you made it to the finish line alone or with your family, you can be truly proud of yourself, your children, and your loved ones! To return to the starting point at the pass summit, you can either take the same route as on the way up (from Hundsfeldsee you can also descend directly via the Seekarstraße road), or you and your family can shorten the return journey using one of the two open cable cars: The Grünwaldkopf cable car takes you back to Obertauern and the P3 Grünwaldkopf parking lot, from where it's another 1.2 km and 75 m of elevation gain back to the pass summit. The Kringsalm cable car, on the other hand, takes you back to the Kringsalm and the Seekarhaus mountain hut, from where it's a direct 2.1 km and 68 m descent via the Seekarstraße road back to the pass summit. For every participant (including you) in the SEEKARHAUS AND KRINGSALM Family Trail, free descents with the Hochalmbahn or Kringsalmbahn (both above Krummschnabelsee) and/or the Grünwaldkopfbahn (at Grünwaldsee and Hochalm) are included in the entry fee upon presentation of their Family Trail start number!
