About the Race

The SCARPA Seekarspitz Vertical takes you from the starting area at the pass summit (Radstädter Tauernpass) in Obertauern, first across the B99 federal highway (crossing secured with marshals!) and then along the left side of Seekarstraße to the sports center in Obertauern. Immediately after crossing the highway, you'll have to climb the first 20 meters in altitude, after which the route descends slightly. At the sports center, turn left onto Ringstraße and after about 100 meters, you'll reach the junction and the start of the hiking trail towards Berghotel Sonnhof on your right. After a short downhill section on the gravel road to the Zentralbahn valley station, you cross a wide wooden bridge over the rushing Hundsfeld-Taurachbach stream and then pass through the gate in the pasture fence into the unique Obertauern-Hundsfeldmoor nature reserve and European protected area. From there, you follow a moderately ascending nature trail that takes you in a sharp left turn under the Zentralbahn chairlift and over a rise to the Sonnhofweg trail. Turn right onto the Sonnhof asphalt road, which you follow immediately and again after 100 meters at the next left turn opposite the Sonnlift station building, until you reach the Berghotel Sonnhof. In front of the Sonnhof mountain hotel, turn right off the Sonnhof asphalt road onto the gently ascending gravel path. Immediately after the next right-hand bend, shortly after the mountain hut, turn left again onto the hiking trail, which initially climbs steeply and then moderately. This trail leads you to the Wisenegg gravel road, which you then cross. Afterward, the steepest section of the SCARPA Seekarspitz Vertical awaits you: In the next 200 meters, you will climb 68 meters in altitude, equivalent to an average gradient of 34%! After the steepest section, you'll reach the picturesque Grünwaldsee lake, having already covered 2.6 km, just over half the distance, and almost half the elevation gain. At the lake, turn left and follow the gravel road to the T-junction, which you then leave to the right. You'll now enter the hiking trail, which runs behind the Seekareckbahn valley station (which you'll pass on your right), under the cable car, and above the Grünwaldsee. The trail offers stunning views down to the lake and then leads you to a short stretch of paved road, which you follow uphill – located directly in front of the Hochalmbahn mountain station. After 200 meters, the asphalt road turns into a well-maintained gravel path, and then "only" the final climb awaits you, with an average gradient of approximately 22% over the last 700 meters to the highest point of SCARPA. Seekarspitz Vertical, is quite challenging. A few meters further on you have reached the finish line and you can be really proud of yourself and enjoy the wonderful 360° panoramic view at the aptly named Panoramabahn mountain station. Immediately after crossing the finish line, you can refuel at the refreshment station and change your clothes, as luggage will be transported up to the Panorama cable car mountain station. Afterwards, you'll hike 179 meters down to the Kringsalm cable car mountain station, where free minibus shuttles will take you back to the starting area at the pass summit from 6:15 pm. The awards ceremony will take place at 6:30 pm next to or inside the Kringsalm cable car mountain station. Alternatively, you can hike from the Kringsalm cable car mountain station to Grünwaldsee and Hochalm, and from there follow the same route as the SCARPA Seekarspitz Vertical race back to the start at the pass summit.
