About the Race

The RAIFFEISEN Trail Ultra 8 Summits leads you from the start/finish area at the Radstädter Tauernpass in Obertauern directly to a steeper path where you'll climb the first 30 meters in elevation over a distance of 200 meters. Once you've conquered these 30 meters, you turn sharply left and after a few meters ascend the extremely steep Gamsleiten 14d ski slope towards the Achenrain Hut. Here you'll have to climb another 50 meters in elevation over 200 meters! At the top, you turn right and now you'll descend rapidly along a long stretch of gravel and paved road. After a sharp right turn at the Brettsteinalm, you'll run below the Kirchbühel ski lift to the Beatles memorial. At the Beatles memorial, leave the paved road by turning sharply left and, on the right edge of the Kirchbühellift ski run 25a, tackle the steeper cross-country downhill section across the unmown meadow (Caution: grazing area!). Once you reach the bottom of the slope, traverse to the left so that you emerge on the left side of the Kirchbühellift valley station. Continue straight ahead and use the stile to cross the fence behind the Zehnerkarbahn valley station. At the gravel road junction, turn right, and after just 70 meters, turn sharply left again onto the meadow. Follow the meadow and safely cross the B99 using ski bridge no. 2. Then ascend the steep slope of the Grünwaldkopf ski run (8a) – first in switchbacks and then crossing it twice – until you reach the gravel road towards Grünwaldsee. After 100 meters on the gravel road, turn left onto the undulating path to the Bärwurzkaralm, leaving the village of Obertauern for a considerable distance. Shortly before the Mayerlalm, the path ends at a gravel road. Here, turn left and follow the gravel road slightly downhill directly to the B99. Immediately after crossing the B99 (Caution! Marshals are present!), you'll reach the very well-known and beautiful Gnadenalm. You'll need your headlamp at least until you get there! From the Gnadenalm, follow the ascending alpine road westwards towards the Tauernkarleitenalm in wide switchbacks. After the Tauernkarleitenalm, the road ends, and you follow a level path westwards to the Stubhöhe. Continue southwards through a sparse larch forest, then increasingly steeply and briefly over some rocky terrain until you reach the saddle below the Bärenstaffl (2125 m). From there, follow the path along the ridge westwards towards the Steinfeldspitze for only a short distance, then turn left at the signpost onto a trail that leads steeply down across meadows (a few meters over loose scree at the top) to the Hafeichtscharte. Continue southwards in numerous switchbacks on an easy path up to the Spazeck (2065 m). Then follow the ridge westwards – initially descending briefly, then climbing again for a few meters – to the Spirzinger (2066 m). The steep but technically easy hut trail then leads downhill to the Südwiener Hütte and onwards – repeatedly crossing the forest road – to the Gschwendthofhütte refreshment station on the Gnadenalm (Km 20.8). After the first 20.8 km of easy trail, you leave the alpine pasture area, heading first towards the impressive Johannes Waterfall. Following a short stretch of tarmac to the Felseralm (only 1 km), the trail truly enters high alpine terrain. You now follow the path steeply uphill through sparse forest, pass the Bodenalm cross, and catch a glimpse of the emerald-green Wildsee. Continue into the cirque below the Vorderen Großwandspitze (Front Großwand Peak). Ascend over boulders to the steep north face, which leads up to the saddle of the Hinteren Großwandspitze (Rear Großwand Peak). From the saddle, follow the prominent ridge westward, then past the southern cliffs of the Hinteren Großwandspitze to another grassy saddle. From there, descend into the north-facing, sloping, but straightforward cirque. After a very steep ascent with easy and safe climbing sections, you reach the sub-summit of the Großer Pleißlingkeil (2501 m). The descent begins immediately from there. A spectacular downhill run (700m elevation loss) through the scree fields of the Pleißling cirque awaits you, leading to the Südwiener Hütte. You then leave the Südwiener Hütte heading south and after another 300 meters of gentle ascent, you reach the Windsfeld with its saddle that leads you into the Lungau and Lantschfeld valleys. From the saddle, almost 15 km of downhill await you, first on a natural trail and then on a gravel road to Tweng. Here you can recover from the initial exertions around the Großer Pleißlingkeil and really let loose again on the long, sweeping downhill! By the time you reach Tweng, you will have already covered 52 km and climbed almost 3,000 meters. Immediately after crossing the B99 (caution; safety personnel are present!), the trail climbs steeply – secured by ropes in one section – through the Veitschengraben gorge with its charming waterfall. Upon reaching the Hofbaueralmen alpine pastures, a beautiful spot awaits you. The path then leads you over a col into a vast cirque and from there to the Twenger Alm (km 57.3). From there, you can pick up speed again over the next 3 km on undulating terrain along gravel and natural paths, before three more high alpine peaks await you from the Mankeialm onwards. Beyond the avalanche barrier, the trail leads you along the left edge of the Plattenkar cirque on the southwest flank of the Plattenspitze, becoming quite steep in places. From there, you ascend to the Plattenkarsattel saddle and continue along the straightforward, initially rocky ridge to the Plattenspitze summit (2294 m) with its distinctive radio mast. You then follow the scenic ridge, which, with a short uphill section and a scree-covered stretch, brings you to the wide saddle before the Hundskogel and the trail junction just below the Hundskogel (2239 m). A short downhill section allows you to catch your breath before you begin the ascent to the Seekarspitze from the Seekaralm alpine pasture. The path initially climbs gently until, just before the summit, you'll encounter a short, easy scramble. Once you reach the Seekarspitze summit (2350 m), you can almost see the finish line. From there, it's just a matter of passing the Grünwaldsee lake and climbing a short 50 m to the Krummschnabelsee lake. Continue on to the Dikt'n Alm alpine pasture and from there take the Seekarstraße road back to the start/finish area in Obertauern. If you make it before the 9:30 pm cutoff time, you can be really proud of yourself!
