Hafnarfjall Ultra is a trail run event first held on June 28 2025 in the steep slopes of Mt. Hafnarfjall close to Borgarnes town on the west coast of Iceland. The event consists of four races, three of which are highly technical with relatively high elevation compared to the distances.
The run starts in Borgarnes. From there the route crosses the Borgarfjörður Bridge and then up towards the mountain. The route to the summit follows a marked hiking path. After 7.9 km the runners reach the top (791 m above sea level). From there the route goes to the nearest summit Gildalshnjúkur (844 m) and the to the other five peaks of the Hafnarfjall mountains, i.e., Miðtindur, Klausturtunguhóll, Katlaþúfu, Þverfell and Tungukollur (663 m). At the top of Tungukollur (12.7 km) the runners turn around and soon after that they turn left down the slopes of Tungukollur down to Tungudalur valley. At the bottom of the slopes, there is a refreshment station (14 km). There, runners take a sharp right turn up the valley and then down Hafnardalur valley behind the mountains. After some 22 km, Illagil canyon is crossed and soon after that the route goes up towards Mt. Hafnarfjall from the south. From there, the route goes down again, mostly following the same path as on the original way up, all the way to the finish line in Borgarnes. The route is technical and some parts of it might be tough for people afraid of hights.
