About the Race

The Hengill Ultra 53K starts in the geothermal town of Hveragerdi and takes runners deep into the rugged mountains of the Hengill volcanic area, one of Iceland's most unique trail running destinations. The course begins on flowing trails above Hveragerdi before climbing through the geothermal valleys of Reykjadalur, where steam rises from hot springs and vents scattered across the landscape. From there, runners continue into increasingly remote terrain, following mountain trails through deep valleys, lava fields, river crossings and highland plateaus. A major highlight of the route is the ascent to Vorduskeggi at 810 meters, the highest point in the Hengill area. The summit offers panoramic views across Thingvellir National Park, the surrounding volcanic mountains and the Icelandic highlands. The climb is rewarded with long stretches of spectacular mountain running through wild and untouched landscapes. The return journey traverses the open moorlands and valleys of Hengill before descending back through Reykjadalur and the dramatic river canyons above Hveragerdi. The final kilometers combine fast trails and scenic geothermal surroundings before returning to the finish line in the town center. With approximately 2050 meters of elevation gain, the Hengill Ultra 53K offers a challenging and highly varied mountain course featuring geothermal areas, lava fields, river crossings, technical single track trails and some of the most spectacular trail running terrain in Iceland.
