The Hengill Ultra 26K starts in the geothermal town of Hveragerdi and offers runners an excellent introduction to the spectacular trails of the Hengill volcanic area. The course follows scenic trails above Hveragerdi before climbing into the geothermal valley of Reykjadalur, where steam rises from natural hot springs and geothermal vents. Runners continue through rolling mountain terrain, crossing rivers and following a mix of single track trails, gravel paths and rugged mountain tracks. Throughout the race, participants are treated to views of lava fields, colorful rhyolite mountains and the surrounding valleys of southwest Iceland. The route combines runnable sections with more technical terrain, creating a varied and enjoyable trail running experience. With significant elevation gain and constantly changing landscapes, the Hengill Ultra 26K delivers a true Icelandic mountain running adventure while remaining accessible to runners looking to step up from shorter trail races.
