About the Race

For travel packages contact Nonni Travel. Hertz rental car is the official partner of the event. The Hengill Ultra 106K is the ultimate challenge of the Hengill Ultra series. Starting in the geothermal town of Hveragerdi, runners embark on a demanding journey through the volcanic mountains, geothermal valleys and remote wilderness of the Hengill area. The course consists of two consecutive loops of the 53K route, requiring runners to complete the full mountain course twice. This format creates a unique endurance challenge that tests pacing, nutrition, mental strength and resilience over a full day and night in the Icelandic mountains. Runners pass through Reykjadalur, one of Iceland's most famous geothermal valleys, before continuing across lava fields, mountain passes and remote highland terrain. The route features river crossings, technical mountain trails and long stretches of rugged wilderness. A major highlight is the ascent to Vorduskeggi at 810 meters, the highest point in the Hengill mountain range, offering panoramic views across Thingvellir National Park and the surrounding volcanic landscape. Returning to Hveragerdi at the halfway point provides access to personal support and race services before runners head back into the mountains to repeat the challenge. The second loop rewards careful pacing and determination as fatigue sets in and the terrain becomes increasingly demanding. With approximately 4100 meters of elevation gain, the Hengill Ultra 106K is a serious mountain ultra that combines technical trails, geothermal landscapes, river crossings and sustained climbing. It offers an authentic Icelandic trail running experience in one of the country's most unique and challenging mountain environments.
