The race starts near the estate buildings in Glen Tanar, with runners heading out quickly onto wide gravel estate tracks. The opening kilometre is fairly flat and fast, giving you a chance to settle into rhythm before the course gradually begins to rise. After the first section, the route climbs gently into the Caledonian pine forest, following smooth forest tracks that wind deeper into the glen. The incline is steady rather than steep, so most runners can maintain a comfortable running pace. As you gain a little elevation, the forest opens occasionally to reveal views across the surrounding hills. Around the midpoint of the course (roughly 4–6 km) the route loops through quieter woodland trails. This section tends to feel more remote, with narrower paths and a rolling profile that alternates between short climbs and flowing descents. The course then turns back toward the heart of the estate, joining broader tracks again. A gradual downhill allows runners to pick up speed as the forest thins and the glen opens out ahead. In the final kilometres, the route follows fast, flat estate paths along the valley floor, often beside open fields and woodland edges. With the finish approaching, it’s a great section to push the pace before returning to the estate for the finish line.
