*  Solidarity

Solidarity is a value that is practised and shared by the inhabitants at the heart of natural regions, which can become hostile, and consequently they need to help each other to progress better together or simply to survive. In the name of the principle of solidarity, each player in the field of trail-running is asked to prioritise going to the aid of anybody in danger or difficulty wherever they are and in whatever circumstance.

In a more global manner, the participants and players in the trail-running field often show solidarity by making a commitment in favour of environmental, social or societal causes or by helping the underprivileged. Trail-running race organisers implement this principle of responsibility by directly supporting charitable actions and sustainable development; numerous participants “run for a cause” to support the projects of their choice.

Health policy

Definition

The term “health policy” refers to all actions implemented by ITRA to protect runners’ health and to contribute to doping-free sport.

ITRA health policy is part of its general mission of developing and promoting trail-running. It aims to improve the quality of organizations and the safety of participants, but also to promote a discipline that respects the spirit and values of sport as formalized in the ITRA ethics charter.

ITRA health policy is based on a belief: runners' health is everyone’s business – runners and their entourage, race organizers and sports brands.

ITRA health policy is divided into 4 main strategic principles:

  • Education
  • Safety
  • Research
  • QUARTZ program

Organization

ITRA initiates and coordinates the health policy operated by two other non-profit organizations:

  • The association Athletes For Transparency (AFT) that provides a technical expertise and implements QUARTZ program
  • The endowment fund Ultra Sports Science (USS) that finances and implements research, and spread scientific knowledge.

Our priorities

ITRA health policy is defined through four priorities.

     Education

ITRA conducts and coordinates prevention and awareness actions directly with runners or in partnership with race organizers. These actions aim to improve runners’ safety, to prevent injuries and pathologies inherent to the practice of trail-running, as well as the health risks caused by the use of self-medication or doping practices. These actions include the diffusion of knowledge from applied medical research to the practice of trail-running.

     Safety

In order to improve organizations’ quality and participants’ safety, ITRA implements support actions for the race organizers. The latter have the obligation to set up mechanisms to ensure safety and security of all stakeholders.

To this end, ITRA has defined and formalized guidelines outlining all accident prevention actions, organizational principles including transport and information systems as well as for the rescue part, the description of human means and necessary material to assist people in distress (See the ITRA's security guidelines).

     Research

As part of its health policy, ITRA promotes the diffusion of scientific and medical knowledge related to the practice of endurance sports and in particular trail-running. In this context, ITRA is working in partnership with the Ultra Sports Science foundation whose mission is the enhancement and broadcast of scientific and medical knowledge related to ultra-endurance sports to improve the practitioners’ health and safety.

     QUARTZ program

QUARTZ is a program designed to protect runners’ health and to contribute to doping-free sport. A unique program for monitoring athletes’ health all year round, it can detect both possible pathologies or abnormal profiles in relation to doping.

QUARTZ program is for all, elite and regular runners, event organizers, sport brands and institutions. It consists of 3 modules:

  • QUARTZ Elite
  • QUARTZ Regular
  • QUARTZ Event

QUARTZ program is technically implemented by the association Athletes For Transparency whose expertise is recognized in the field of health and anti-doping. AFT collaborates in an international framework with all the institutional players in the anti-doping fight.
