麥理浩徑是香港最長的山徑,全長100公里,共分為10段。其中第3至8段被認為是最具挑戰性的部分,總攀升高度達到3200米,被山友們稱為「雙坳」。由於「雙坳」極具挑戰性,成為各項長途山賽的試練場。能夠克服這個路段的參賽者,證明他們具備足夠的實力挑戰100公里或以上的長途賽。 「麥徑熱身賽」之舉辦目的是為了提供一個正式的熱身機會給準備參加較長途山賽的山友們。比賽距離為57公里的「大雙坳」除了個人組別外,還特別設立了四人組和二人組別,並允許安排人員在沿途提供支援,可進行團隊合作和補給支援的實戰訓練。此外,亦設較短途(28公里)的「小雙坳」路程給參賽者選擇。
