Authenticity is the first trail-running value. At its origins, trail-running was born from the runners’ motivation to practise their sport in contact with natural surroundings, so as to experience the beauty of the landscape and to learn to evolve without artifice in an environment that is demanding for both body and spirit. Trail-running is an authentic sport, because it creates a confrontation between the participant and the unspoilt natural environment as a source of inspiration, surpassing oneself, but also one of harmony.

As a social activity, trail running promotes human relationships based on simplicity, conviviality, sharing and respect for differences. The trail-running community gives these authentic values as much importance as those of performance and competition.

FAQ Performance index

The ITRA’s performance index aims to  provide an evaluation of the performance level of trail runners. In particular, it compares the international level of trail runners against athletes who have never participated in such a competition. But this performance index must not be considered as an international ranking for trail runners. However, the ITRA is actually studying the possibility of setting up a true ranking which would therefore compliment the performance index.

The performance index is regularly updated (more than 4 900 trail races taken in to account at November 1st 2014 !!!). For each runner, the best 5 races are taken into account. In the situation where there are not a sufficient number of races, a statistical calculation is made from the known results so as to estimate their performance level.

It is worth noting that although the calculation for this index is based on the results of the year in progress and the 2 precedent years,  there are also numerous previous results, but they are only visible to ITRA members ( see subscriptions organisers, associations, brands or runners & sympathisers at 5 Euros ).

To what level corresponds the performance index?

How are the points calculated, and attributed to each race?

The distance and the height gain stated by the organisers are added to the coefficient for the difficulty of the race.

Apart from the distance, height gain and the difficulty coefficient, performance is transformed into an equivalent distance on the flat. Each distance on the flat is associated with a theoretical maximum performance (TMP).

For each race, each runner is attributed with a number of points, called "côte", out of 1000 which is in relation to both their result and  the theoretical maximum performance (TMP).

Are the number of points attributed to each runner identical for each race?

The taking in to account, for each race, of the distance, the height gain and the difficulty coefficient allows the attribution of the number of points (côte) for the different races.

Only the time achieved by the runner is taken in to account. The runner’s finishing position in the race is ignored.

Which races are included in the performance index?

This performance index is calculated using all the trail races which publish an official ranking.

With reference of the definition of trail as defined by the ITRA, this index takes in to account all those races in open country which have a minimum distance on asphalt and which take place in total or semi self-sufficiency.

What is the total number of races used to establish this performance index?

The 5 best results from the all the race categories are taken in to account.

In the case where a runner does not have a sufficient number of races, a tapered statistical calculation allows extrapolation of theoretical results of the missing races, and hence the calculation of the runner’s performance index.

One single race can therefore be sufficient for a runner to appear in the performance index.

The performance index is calculated over what time span?

This performance index is calculated over the last 36 months.

This period is long enough to permit reliable statistical calculations.

Furthermore, in the case of an injured runner, they still appear in the performance index due to their previous performances.

How is the performance index calculated?

The performance index is based on the average of the runners’ 5 best results, whatever the category, over the 2 previous years and the year in progress.

Why is the "General" index often better than an index by category?

The general index is calculated on the weighted average of the 5 best results, a mix of categories, while the category index is calculated on the best results of the category. For a versatile runner, often their best 5 races will be spread across several different categories, which therefore gives them a better result in the general index than they would have for each category.

Is the performance index mixed?

No, there is one for men and one for women (but the 2 are calculated using he same method and it is therefore possible to compare the level of performance between people of the opposite sex).

Is age taken in to account in the performance index?

The creation of age categories is in progress, so for the moment age is not taken in to account.

For all that concerns the performance index, is it advantageous to be a member of the ITRA?

All members of the ITRA (see subscriptions organisers, associations, brands or runners & sympathisers at 5 Euros) have a member’s account. To consult the performance index it is necessary to identify oneself (click on “My account”, then give your login and password), it is then possible to consult runners’ complete results, as well as the full results of each race. Being a member of the ITRA also allows the consultation of previous year’s performance indexes.
